As farmer verification continues under From Capacity to Capital, a programme by The Aquaculture Consortium (TAC), African Guarantee Fund (AGF) and Equity Bank Limited to strengthen farmers and MSMEs and connect them to appropriate financing and support, we are hearing these realities directly from farmers. As part of the programme, Vemric is supporting the verification process to better understand what is affecting production on the ground. Access to quality feed is a recurring challenge, with many farmers travelling to Kisumu because local outlets are limited. Nets are also difficult to access, predators remain a major concern, and poor roads make farms harder to reach.
Yet the visits are also showing the resourcefulness of farmers. Farmer Joan, who has invested in fish farming, produces her own feed using zola and black soldier fly (BSF) to keep her fish growing. Her experience captures both the determination of farmers and the gaps that continue to limit production. Understanding these realities matters because the right financing must be matched with the inputs, infrastructure and support needed to make that financing work.
